"Tender Is the Night" is a surprisingly subtle and deeply psychological novel by the American classic, which many critics put even above "The Great Gatsby", and the author himself called "his most beloved work." And this is no coincidence: the book turned out to be largely autobiographical, Fitzgerald described in it the other side of his outwardly luxurious life with his wife Zelda. A longed-for American dream that turned into a real tragedy. In the history of the moral degradation of a talented psychiatrist, he put the pain and suffering that he himself experienced in the fight against schizophrenia of his wife ... But this book is not about illness or death - it is about love.
“NOBODY CAN SAY WITH CONFIDENCE WHAT PLACE YOU TAKE IN ANOTHER'S LIFE.” ― «Tender Is the Night» , F. Scott Fitzgerald
A story full of sorrows and dark secrets behind a beautiful, dazzlingly sparkling facade of an idle rich life. The author's flowing, beautiful syllable easily draws pictures of the entertainment of the rich and famous in their entirety, striking chic, illusory and deceptive friendship, the fleetingness of intoxicating fun, behind which it is easy to find satiety or, on the contrary, dissatisfaction. In addition to this, a variety of fun is often followed by disintegration, a rapid fall down and self-destruction.
Young Rosemary Hoyt - an aspiring, but already popular and famous actress, while vacationing on the French coast, meets the brilliant couple of Divers, Nicole and Dick, who draw a still completely inexperienced girl into the world of entertainment of high society, those who, thanks to money, live on an unprecedented scale. not even in one day, but in one burning intoxicating moment, torn out of the smoky swirls and dancing multicolored flashes in short episodes. Nicole is as beautiful as miraculous perfection, invariably elegant and setting the tone for the whole society. And Dick is attractive, like a Greek god, witty, the dream of all women. Of course, they amaze Rosemary, she is especially fond of Dick, deciding to move from innocent flirting to more serious actions.
The book is divided into three parts. The first is light, sparkling like champagne, bursting with small bubbles of idleness, little by little, through Rosemary, drawing the reader into this whirlpool. The second reveals what is hidden under the numerous lush draperies of the carefree life of the Drivers. There is both the dirt of the past, and a serious trauma that greatly affected Nicole's mental health, and a certain inertia of Dick, who lost control of his own life, so uncontrollably and imperceptibly began to approach the collapse. And all the splendor of Dick, so impressive in the first part, fades, peels off, like the thinnest layer of false gilding. The only thing that can smooth out the so sharply striking inner emptiness a little is that Dick at least tried, as far as possible, to carry the load put by himself. On the other hand, he himself drove himself into this situation, succumbing to an impulse. And his subsequent relationship with Rosemary only aggravates his dislike for the hero. The third book is that wreck. Fall as a professional, uselessness in your own family, personal breakdown, flavored with a pernicious craving for alcohol. Decay while alive.
In general, the story is deep, despite the fact that at first it may seem like a kind of collection of morals, curiosities and entertainment of the high society, however, I lowered the rating for the general split of the narrative, the lack of integrity. It feels like the whole novel is assembled from broken pieces, the pattern is distinguishable, but empty joints between different-sized fragments are also noticeable. And in some places, although the syllable was mesmerizing, flowing with sad melodies or billowing up in sheaves of sparks, it was completely uninteresting to read, a kind of sagging was felt.
