"Suspicion", Season 1

Review of the series "Suspicion" - a political thriller about people accused of kidnapping a major

Unsuccessful new Apple TV + from the creators of "The Americans" and "Germany 83".

In an expensive New York hotel, a group of people in rubber masks of members of the royal family steal the young man Leo - the son of a famous businesswoman, billionaire and CEO of a technology company Katherine Newman (Uma Thurman), who immediately asks for help from the CIA. As the kidnapping tape goes viral on the Internet, intelligence agencies quickly identify four suspects - British, who at first glance are not connected in any way: a cybersecurity expert, a financial consultant, an Oxford teacher, and even a hitman wanted by Interpol. The first three are arrested in broad daylight - the experienced fourth escapes. Under interrogation, the heroes swear that they do not understand anything, but in the eyes of the public, friends and family members, they have already become guilty of a crime. At this time, someone publishes a video addressed to Newman: she is required to tell the truth.

"Suspicion" is another American remake of the Israeli series. Such, for example, was the recent drama “Your Honor”, the universal conflict of which (moral decay and betrayal of one’s own ideals for the sake of family safety) was easily adapted to the realities of the States, and later to Russian reality. The new Apple TV+ series proves that this approach doesn't always work. The fact is that the original thriller False Flag is directly related to the geopolitical conflict between Israel and the Arab world: according to the plot, Israeli citizens are accused of working for the Mossad and kidnapping a high-ranking official from Iran. In adaptation, the Middle East conflict was replaced by anti-capitalist rhetoric and the war of the rich against the poor. True, the creators are doing everything possible so that the viewer considers the villain in history not to be evil corporations and muddy billionaires, but for some reason people who demand to publish the truth and are ready for anything to make ends meet.

However, the ambiguous ideological position is the least of the problems of the series. As you know, even shameless propaganda can be forgiven if it is made by a talented cinematographer. It's surprising that the makers of The Americans and Germany 83, arguably the best spy thrillers of the past decade, teamed up to produce a series as faceless and sterile as Under Suspicion. He, like one of his heroes on the run, does his best to blend in with the crowd and not stand out at all. Behind the intriguing plot lies not a dynamic thriller built on cliffhangers and unexpected revelations, but a tedious prestige drama about the insultingly boring secrets of the main characters. The only feeling that "Under Suspicion" evokes is nostalgia for zero television. Series like 24 didn't try to tell the complex, psychological stories of the characters, but they did everything possible to make the viewer fidget in his chair and bite his nails from tension. Then a sense of danger here and now, fear for the characters and global intrigue dominated, and now there is only a bitter realization that something is unlikely to happen to the hero: the viewer has not yet learned how tragic his life has been in the last ten years.

With the growing number of streaming platforms generating tons of content, it seems like a luxury to spend eight hours on a series like Under Suspicion. This is a frankly passing, often annoying, and most importantly, a story that has been stalling for a long time, which in the end will not pay off the audience's expectations. Believe me, you already know that all people are hiding something, whether it be a billionaire with the manners of a god or your harmless family man next door.
