Review of the movie "Role Play" - a comedy action movie with Kaley Cuoco
A mediocre action-comedy that has nothing interesting to offer.
Emma (Kaley Cuoco) has just returned home from a work trip, having completely forgotten about her own wedding anniversary. To make it up to her husband Dave (David Oyelowo), she suggests a "two strangers meet in a hotel bar" role-playing game. The date is spoiled by a mysterious gentleman named Bob (Bill Nye), who treats the couple to a drink and sprinkles in some killer puns. The next day, news breaks in the press that a murder was committed in the same hotel the previous night. That's how Dave discovers that his wife is a killer.
Unlike old Dave, the viewer is aware of Emma's double life from the very beginning. The main character played by Kaley Cuoco from the first minutes deftly changes wigs and effectively strips her victims. The status of the best mercenary leads to the fact that for her head assigned a large reward. In a good way, the killer should have laid low, but in this case it would have turned out to be a completely different movie.
The original title of the movie "Role Play", which translates as "Role Play", refers to the unfortunate evening when everything went wrong. Domestic localizers here, as usual, a little tricky. The phrase "Role Play" sets up a completely different mood and in theory should attract the attention of fans of action movies like "The Bodyguard of the killer's wife" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". However, even with the naked eye you can see that at least the scale of these titles is very different.
In most countries, "Role Play" will skip the theatrical distribution and will be released immediately on streaming Amazon Prime Video. Russian viewers have a chance to see the novelty in cinemas a month before the digital release. Luck, to put it bluntly, questionable. The movie is sharpened for the streaming platform, and it is immediately obvious. The plot is mediocre. The characters are lifeless. Humor is not to be expected. The action is pretty mediocre. Nothing that would be worth watching on the big screen.
It is clear that to a comedy action movie from streaming initially modest expectations. At best, the viewer is waiting for a disposable movie without pretensions to originality,
which, although it copes with the entertainment task, but quickly eroded from memory. "Role Play" is really easy to forget immediately after the final credits, but does not amuse and during viewing. One hundred minutes of timing stretches on interminably long. The movie can't offer a single funny joke and shows rather monotonous action. For a comedy action movie, this is unforgivable. Even the critically acclaimed "No Answer" with Ana de Armas and Chris Evans looks much livelier against the background of "Role Play".
The production is the responsibility of medium-sized filmmakers: director Tom Vensan ("Jack Reacher", "The Bodyguard") and screenwriter Seth W. Owen ("Morgan", "We Have Seen the Night"). The creators of the project as if do not understand why and for whom they shoot. The tape cracks from all sorts of clichés and stamps, from which even the unsophisticated viewer is tired. The allegedly unexpected twist in the third act looks like a complete disrespect to the audience: hardly anyone will buy such a cheap trick. However, even such a maneuver will seem a trifle after the primitive finale in the spirit of "the heroes ride off into the sunset". Hope was inspired by the cast, but the situation is not saved either by the murderous charm of Kaley Cuoco ("The Big Bang Theory", "The Flight Attendant") or the dazzling performance of Bill Nye ("Real Love", "Rock Wave"). The latter appears in the frame only to drink a couple of shots and make a few puns. From there, everything goes downhill from there.
"Role Play" turned out to be a rather lifeless movie, rather than a murderous one, as its authors would have liked. In the end, the film has every chance to get lost among the same faceless projects in the streaming catalog.
