Hawkeye is a Christmas comedy about an unexpected partnership

The new Marvel series, in which the heroes finally save not the world from destruction, but their own skins from the Eastern European mafia.

year 2012. During the attack of the alien invaders Chitauri on New York, the father of little Kate Bishop dies - at the same time she sees Hawkeye, a selfless and brave hero who, even without superpowers, lays down enemies in batches. A year after the events of Avengers: Endgame and the cancellation of Thanos' flick, life is back on track - grown-up archery Kate (Hayley Steinfeld) learns that her mother, who runs a high-tech security company, is engaged to some murky guy (charismatic Tony Dalton). She tries to spy on him, goes to a black market auction for trinkets associated with the Avengers, and steals from there Ronin's costume, but most importantly, thereby ruining the Christmas holidays of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who came to New York with children.

It is difficult to understand the fans of the MCU, who call Hawkeye one of their favorite characters: surrounded by gods, huge green creatures and sarcastic billionaires, like the Black Widow, he always stuck out like a thumb on his hand. The dramatic story with the disappearance of the family after the click and the subsequent decision to become Ronin, the ruthless fighter of organized crime, did not save this most boring and, let's say, background hero. Comics are another matter; With the release of the acclaimed "Hawkeye" by Matt Fraction and David Ach, considered one of the best wounds of Marvel in recent years, the fan attitude towards the hero has changed markedly. It's not like a radical reimagining of Hawkeye, but rather a very successful attempt to bring the hero to life with the help of a brilliantly illustrated story that reads like great fanfiction. It is not surprising that this particular comic became the main source of inspiration for the new Disney + series (Fraction himself, by the way, acted as a consultant) - it influenced not only the plot, new characters and the relationship of the central duo, but even the project's identity.

Of the four Marvel fictional series released this year, Hawkeye seems to be the most walk-through and optional, but this is, oddly enough, the main reason to give it a shot. In recent years, the cinematic universe has reached such an epic level that its characters resurrect people, create their own TV-inspired reality, uncover worldwide terrorist conspiracies and mend the multiverse. The creators of this megalomaniac content revel in myth-making and attempts to integrate their invisible millennial heroes into world history so much that they forget about some basic reasons for the popularity of comics. Readers fell in love not only with Spider-Man, once again saving the world, but also such a living and real, moonlighting several jobs and unable to pay the rent for Peter Parker. Just this earthiness, some kind of routine has long been lacking in Marvel projects - "Hawkeye" just brings them back to the screen, albeit a small one.

One of the best parts of the MCU is the presence of heroes in the pop culture space, the desire of ordinary people to conceptualize and celebrate their exploits. If earlier this was limited to a boring museum about the legacy of Captain America, now on Broadway there is a musical in honor of Steve Rogers (a very funny and jamming musical number), and most importantly, a generation has grown up within the framework of the cinematic universe, which is equal to the beloved heroes. Growing up with money, but dreamed of shooting straight from the bow, Kate Bishop is just one of them. It is not hard to guess that she will eventually become the new Hawkeye, but, unlike some Elena Belova, the successor to another boring Avengers character, this transfer of the title looks much more natural and honest, because the series is not tied to the revealed secrets of the past, but to the consequences of the already familiar segment from the life of Barton-Ronin.

It seems that the Western press, drawing conclusions from the first two episodes, underestimated the series. Now, after the release of the third episode, it becomes clear that "Hawkeye" has several unexpected trump cards: what is only an inventive chase scene; an action game tied to an assortment of Barton's arrows, or hints of the appearance of Kingpin, Daredevil and all the same Elena Belova. Although, let's be honest, the future events of the series or the denouement of several detective plot branches at once (will Barton have time to return to his family by Christmas?) Are not so important, as his already formed atmosphere: "Hawkeye" is primarily an ironic buddy movie in Christmas decorations. Here the villains complain that they cannot find normal storage, because they are actively bought up to open a new loft, and the heroes talk about the personal brand of superheroes and the importance of moving from seriousness to sincerity. Even if in the remaining episodes everything boils down to a typical Marvel explosive ending, it can be safely forgiven for the atmosphere of snowy New York and the mentoring relationship of Barton and Bishop.
