«13 Minutes», Sarah Pinborough

I can't stand young adults. And it's not that I don't like teenagers, I'm just not close to their experiences, thoughts, way of life, I haven't been close to them for 20 years, what can I say? Especially European and American teenagers are not close to me, at least I have a Russian teenager of my own at home).

Sarah Pinborough is a New York Times bestselling and Sunday Times Number one and Internationally bestselling author who is published in over 30 territories worldwide. Having published more than 25 novels across various genres, her recent books include Behind Her Eyes, now a smash hit Netflix limited series, Dead To Her, now in development with Amazon Studios, and 13 Minutes and The Death House in development with Compelling Pictures. Sarah lives in the historic town of Stony Stratford, the home of the Cock and Bull story, with her dog Ted. Her next novel, Insomnia, is out in 2022.

Choosing a book under the marathon item associated with the passage of time, I have long been in pain and chose this book, since the review and the review of it are positive. In addition, the synopsis "Sixteen-year-old Natasha was found on a frosty morning in the river, but she was saved. The girl has no memory of what happened that day. But the behavior of her friends seems strange: they are hiding something. Now the main question for Natasha is how she ended up in the cold river at night and what her best friends - Haley and Jenny - have to do with it. Who wanted to kill her and why? Or maybe it was her own insanity that served the foolish act?" What was the fact? He is my least favorite young adult.

Indeed, the narrative begins with young Natasha being found in a river. After resuscitation, her heart begins to beat, and she was in a state of clinical death for 13 minutes!!! Why wasn't she brain dead, you may ask? And there isn't one, had there been a brain as they say, there would have been a concussion, so write contusion of the skull. The briefly deceased girl is the star of the school, the local Barbie, the beautiful and smart girl. As soon as she regains consciousness, she suddenly remembers her long-abandoned girlfriend, the humongous and mopey Becca. And the other two Barbie girlfriends are acting really weird. Of course they are, because they don't have a brain, either. She's friends with Becca and not friends with her old friends, writing in her diary, talking nonsense, that's the plot, among which is a thin thread of the question of who threw Natasha in the water.

And for many, many pages you read about the complicated lives of teenagers, the social strata of high school, sex, and why we don't hold hands. And the detective element just drowns in these kinds of musings of 16-year-olds.

"I've seen a dick, a pod, a penis - whatever you want to call it once before. Hard and naked. Those words made me cringe a little. At first I laughed. I couldn't help myself. He looked so strange, sticking out of a ball of hair in his groin, such an unusual pale column of skin and veins. There was a drop of liquid coming out of the hole at the top, on the circumference in front of the folds, and he was sitting there waiting for me to touch him..."

Spoiler alert, she did touch it. How I lived all those years without so much valuable information, I can't imagine. And in the feelings and thoughts and other teenage streams of life the whole book. No, no bazaar, there is a detective component and that's three points. The whole thing reminded me of a book about seals and boobs. Is that really something anyone would be interested in reading? Although it might be interesting for those 16 year olds. That's why I gave it a "C", because you shouldn't read books that aren't your age. The only problem is that it's not clear from the synopsis that it's a Young Adult book and the mere presence of the main character who is a teenager shouldn't scare away the reader, because there are many good books where the characters are underage...
